About Amy
Hi, I'm Amy, a part-time tutor and full-time science nerd. With a Summa Cum Laude MSc in Zoology and Microbiology and a passion for unraveling the mysteries of science, I look forward to inspiring you to start to love science - or at least pass your exams in it! I graduated at the top of my class during my undergrad days, winning both a Zoological Society of Southern Africa Top Student Award, as well as the Mathew Jones Shield for Zoology. At the same time, I tutored high school science, managed a Sushi restaurant, volunteered at the SPCA and competed in martial arts. With all this on the go, I fully appreciate the need for a work-life balance and learned to leverage the "work harder, not smarter" principle, which is something I aim to pass on to my students. Science, to me, is not just about understanding how things work—it's a gateway to critical thinking and creative problem-solving. With over 12 years of tutoring experience, including guiding students through the 11+ exams in the UK, teaching high school sciences in South Africa, and teaching undergraduate laboratory sessions, I bring a wealth of knowledge and a knack for making learning enjoyable.

I like to kick off our interaction with a personalised touch, identifying the best learning methods for my clients through an introductory consultation.
Proficient to teach in English, I specialise in making science not just comprehensible but enjoyable. School science can feel like deciphering enigma rather than unlocking the wonders of the world, and unfortunately when teaching a large class, teachers often inadvertently turn it into a maze of confusion. My main goal is to un-complicate the process in 1-on-1 or small group sessions. In our sessions, expect a brief overview or recap of the topic followed by collaborative exploration of questions, be it from prepared worksheets or student homework. The overarching goal during this joint effort is to identify tools for the student to contribute to the "work smarter, not harder" ethos.
My tutoring is designed for high school (grades 1-12) and undergraduate students. Together, we'll explore the wonders of science and make learning a journey worth taking! (Or, at the very least, stop you dreading those science lessons.)
