About Joan
From 11 to 21 years old, I studied English and English literature intensively at school and university. (My BA was in English Literature) After that I became a freelance journalist and writer of short stories and poetry. At age 23 I began teaching creative writing classes to underserved groups, such as people in homeless shelters and seniors in residences. At 27 I took a course on how to teach English as a second language and when I was 28 I started teaching English in a home for the abandoned in Peru. Then I started teaching English in Buenos Aires in private academies and students. I followed that in Barcelona for four years, doing business English classes, academies again and also teaching children. I have taught all levels. I took a break from teaching for a few years, but started over at 40 when I came to Malaga. In Malaga I have been teaching online, and in children's homes, which I enjoy. I am patient, calm and conscientious / attentive to all levels of learner that I know and can adapt my style and material immediately to their needs. At this stage in my teaching career, I have an exceptional knowledge of English grammar and a large vocabulary.

My method depends on what the client asks for, wants and needs. I use a variety of materials accumulated over 7 years. This includes websites, videos, books, and documents that can be shared online while teaching. I speak slowly and clearly and always make sure that my students feel comfortable enough to speak to me no matter how shy or insecure they are. I am lively and never short of conversation starters and I make sure that the balance between speaking and listening is beneficial. I am adept (after many years of teaching) at knowing what works best for each person and if I find something that doesn't work, I always change it, because I know when to be persistent and when to be versatile. There are so many different ways to learn. Often, if necessary and desired, I can also explain in Spanish. One of my best skills is patience and making students feel comfortable and I have the kind of personality that can easily carry a class with energy.
