About Reuben
I'm a recent graduate with a B.S. in Neuroscience, and I've spent the past two years deeply immersed in the kind of coursework and research I now tutor. My background includes hands-on EEG research, where I built complete data analysis pipelines from scratch, as well as laboratory work in microbiology and biochemistry using techniques like GC/MS and IR spectroscopy. I'm currently starting a research position studying the neuroscience of movement and aging, which keeps me closely connected to the material I teach.
Beyond research, I've worked as a teaching assistant for Human Anatomy and Physiology and for an online Adolescent Psychology course, where my responsibilities included grading, leading lab sessions, and helping students work through material that often felt overwhelming at first. That experience taught me how to identify exactly where a student is getting stuck and how to explain things in a way that actually makes sense, rather than just repeating what a textbook or professor already said.
I take tutoring seriously and treat every session with the same preparation and attention to detail that I bring to my own research and coursework. My goal is for students to leave each session not just with an answer, but with a clearer way of thinking about the subject that helps them going forward.

My approach to tutoring starts with figuring out where a student is actually stuck, rather than just re-explaining the textbook. I break down complex topics like cell signaling pathways, biochemical reactions, or EEG/neural concepts into smaller, intuitive pieces, using analogies and visuals to connect new material to things students already understand. I focus heavily on building problem-solving skills rather than memorization, since most science courses test application, not recall.
A typical lesson starts with a quick check on what the student is working on and where they're struggling, whether that's a specific homework problem, an upcoming exam, or a concept that didn't click in lecture. From there, I walk through the underlying logic step by step, have the student work through similar problems with guidance, and finish by identifying a couple of practice problems or review points to reinforce before our next session. If a student is prepping for an exam, I'll often build a short study guide hitting the highest-yield topics.
What sets me apart is that I'm not just teaching from a textbook. I have hands-on research experience that brings these subjects to life: I've run EEG-based neuroscience research, worked in a microbiology lab using GC/MS and IR spectroscopy, and built my own data analysis tools in Python. I can explain why these concepts matter in real research, not just for a test, and I'm used to translating technical material for people who haven't done the work themselves, since I've spent the last year as a teaching assistant for Human Anatomy and Physiology and an online Adolescent Psychology course.
My lessons are best suited for college students taking introductory through upper-level courses in biology, chemistry (organic and inorganic), anatomy and physiology, neuroscience, and psychology, including students preparing for exams, working through problem sets, or building foundational understanding before a class moves too fast to catch up.
