About Jonathan

Hi! I'm Jonathan. I'm originally from Pennsylvania, in the USA, but currently reside in the UK, where I am working towards earning my PhD so that I can begin to teach full time at a collegiate level. Mastering the languages which I study and learning to teach them has been my life's work. I have 6 years' experience with Ancient Greek, 12, with Latin, and more than 15 with Spanish. I have experienced the difficulty of starting a new language and know it intimately. I think language tutoring is incredibly valuable because language-learning is a very personal effort, and most students will require some individual attention at some point in their journey. It's always a pleasure to work with a student to identify what part of their study is giving them trouble and help them develop the tools they need to overcome it. I find teaching to be incredibly rewarding because of the immense difference a good teacher can make in a student's life. Some of the most influential figures in my own life growing up were a handful of truly dedicated teachers, and I want to pay it forward.

About the lesson

I hold a Master's degree in the study of Greek and Latin languages and have been studying Classics for more than 10 years. I am also a fluent (non-native) Spanish speaker. I specialise in language-teaching, especially building conversational fluency, elementary grammar, and written translation skills. I am also comfortable teaching English reading and writing, particularly for standardised tests. I have several years of tutoring experience, primarily with undergraduate students and adult English learners. I am willing to work with students of all ages. When teaching both translation and test-prep, I emphasise close reading with a focus on understanding the structure of the language. Whenever possible, I want to give students a strong foundation to continue to learn and improve on their own, without having to cram. I am happy to work with neurodivergent students and make every effort to accommodate individual needs for all students.
