About Thomas

I'm retired now after 40+ years in higher education, mostly at community colleges but with several years of part-time teaching or moonlighting at universities. My attitude is that I am supposed to help students to reach their goals--which means I need to have high standards balanced by great patience. I practice "mastery learning" as much as possible, which means that a student gets to make multiple attempts at an assignment until satisfactory progress is reached--as defined by the student, not by me. It is also important to me that I avoid personal bias as much as possible in teaching and scoring.

When teaching basic communication, I first introduce Cicero's canons of rhetoric as modified by Peter Ramus. I rely on the video "Be Prepared to Speak" from Toastmasters International as a quick overview. I typically form small groups of 4-6 students who work together on several projects during the course. Then I incorporate some listening exercises and a technique called "triplespeak" where each student does a short impromptu before the group, with several students speaking at once--which experience shows helps to reduce stage fright.
