About David Garner

Professional Musician, Composer, Producer & Elite Music Educator

Based in Oxnard, CA — Offering Individualized Instruction in Keyboard, Composition, Production, & Music Career Mentorship

"My mission as an educator is to help you unlock your unique creative voice. Whether you are picking up an instrument as a hobby, mastering the craft of songwriting, or preparing to take the stage professionally, we will build a customized roadmap designed to turn your musical goals into reality."

The Classroom Meets the World Stage
When you study with me, you aren't just learning music theory from a book—you are gaining insights from over two decades of real-world, high-level industry experience. My career spans international tours, major television networks, indie-film scoring, and social impact production.

Elite Performance & Touring Credentials
On Stage with the Stars: Keyboardist/pianist for major-label, multi-platinum artists including Bruno Mars, Colbie Caillat, and Andy Grammer.

Global Stages: Toured nationally and internationally across the U.S., Europe, and South America.

Iconic Venues & Events: Performed at major cultural touchstones, including South by Southwest (SXSW), the Democratic National Convention, Super Bowl events, The Roxy, and The Hotel Café.

Award-Winning Composition & Production
Film & TV Scoring: Composer for ESPN’s acclaimed 30 for 30 documentary series and the Warner Bros. documentary film Craigslist Joe.

Commercial Brands: Scored high-profile commercial campaigns for brands like Toyota Prius and Heinz.

Music Business & Television: Served as a Musical Director, Tour Manager, and Executive Producer (WE TV’s The Lylas). Collaborated with top-tier industry songwriters and producers like Philip Lawrence and Jacob Luttrell.

Studio & Event Production: Supported the launch of Revolver Recording Studios in Thousand Oaks and founded GreenRoots Productions, producing large-scale benefit concerts and showcases for over a decade.

Proven Educational Excellence
I bring a deep background in school leadership and structured youth programming to my private teaching practice. I know how to motivate students, design effective curricula, and build programs that achieve measurable, award-winning results:

Award-Winning Program Success: Led student music programs to prestigious regional victories, including 2nd Place at the Stanford University Jazz Festival (2023) and 3rd Place at the Reno Jazz Festival (2023).

Structured, Goal-Oriented Mentorship: My background as a school leader and program director ensures that your lessons are organized, highly encouraging, and strictly aligned with your personal growth milestones.

My Teaching Philosophy: A Personalized Roadmap
I believe that music education should be as unique as the artist playing. Every student—from enthusiastic hobbyists to those pursuing professional careers—receives an individualized growth plan built around four core pillars:

1. Technique & Warmups
Build a healthy, relaxed, and strong physical foundation. Whether we are focusing on piano, vocals, or stage presence, you will learn to express yourself effortlessly and prevent injury.

2. Goal-Oriented Creative Focus
We tailor our milestones directly to your specific passions. I offer professional-grade instruction in:

Live Performance & Band Leadership: Learn how to own the stage, direct a band, and connect with an audience.

Songwriting & Composition: Learn the structures of writing memorable songs, scoring for film, or arranging for ensembles.

Music Production & Studio Skills: Learn how to record, produce, and capture your signature sound.

3. Practical, Logic-Based Music Theory
No dry, boring lectures. We integrate music theory naturally as your knowledge and repertoire expand. By understanding the "why" and the logic behind the music, you will gain immense confidence to improvise, play by ear, and write your own material.

4. Mentorship for Aspiring Professionals
For students interested in the music industry, I offer invaluable career coaching. Learn about stage management, studio etiquette, networking, and how to navigate the modern music business from someone who has lived it.

Ready to Start Your Musical Journey?
Whether you want to learn your favorite songs, write a film score, or prepare for your first live showcase, let’s build the plan that gets you there.

I am grateful that David Garner has been teaching my 19-year-old daughter piano and music theory over the past year. She is really motivated to learn and loves how David makes the material really interesting to learn. My daughter is considering studying music in a university setting and potentially exploring a career in it. David’s foundation building has been the best way for her to see if her dreams will continue to grow in the music arena.

I am so lucky to have hired David Garner to be the music teacher for my 2 kids over the past 3 years. They both used to be really shy kids and now music has helped them become more confident. David’s style is really friendly and supportive as well as encouraging. My daughter is now working on regrading for her band’s live performance next month for the first time with her as the lead singer and guitar player. My son is now working on recording a full album with original music he has been writing with David’s support. ~ Mike D
