About Michael

I'm a high school student at a boarding school who scored a 1510 on the SAT (99th percentile). I enjoy helping other students understand the strategies behind the test and improve their confidence when solving problems. Because I've taken the SAT recently, I'm familiar with the current format and the techniques that helped me succeed. My goal as a tutor is to make the SAT feel more manageable and help students reach their highest possible score.

About the lesson

My Approach as an SAT Tutor

My teaching method focuses on strategy, pattern recognition, and confidence. The SAT is not just a knowledge test—it’s a test of how well you understand the exam itself. I teach students how to recognize the patterns in questions, manage time effectively, and approach problems efficiently.

Rather than simply drilling practice questions, I help students understand why the test asks questions in certain ways. Once students understand the logic behind the SAT, their scores improve much faster.

I also focus heavily on active problem solving. During sessions, students explain their thinking out loud so we can identify where mistakes happen and how to fix them.

Typical Lesson Structure

A typical session is structured but flexible depending on the student’s needs.

1. Quick review (5–10 minutes)
We start by reviewing homework or questions the student struggled with since the last session.

2. Strategy lesson (10–15 minutes)
I introduce a specific SAT strategy—for example:

eliminating wrong answers efficiently

recognizing common math shortcuts

identifying trap answers in reading passages

3. Guided practice (20–30 minutes)
We work through real SAT questions together. I guide the student through the reasoning process so they learn the strategy step by step.

4. Independent practice + feedback (10–15 minutes)
The student solves questions independently while I observe their approach and give immediate feedback.

5. Homework and next steps
Students receive targeted practice questions designed to reinforce what we learned.

What Sets Me Apart

I scored a 1510 on the SAT (99th percentile), which means I understand the test from the perspective of someone who recently mastered it. Because I took the SAT relatively recently, I’m very familiar with current question styles and effective strategies.

I also focus on efficiency and confidence. Many students already know most of the material but lose points because of timing, second-guessing, or misunderstanding the question format. I help students fix those issues quickly.

My goal is not just to improve a student’s score, but to help them feel in control of the test.
