About Katie
I have more than 15 years experience. I have found, that while I use a structured program, I also like to cater to the individual. The approach I use allows for that. I encourage students to embrace things that they love and enjoy and are talented in as "ways in" when it comes to learning things that might be more challenging for them.
There are many benefits to having dyslexia and with the way the dyslexic brain works. There are also challenges. But I like to empower my students to embrace what is great about it, and allow that to be a part of the process. We'll get through the other stuff, and I'll guide you through it.

I use "Bowman's Guide to Orton-Gillingham PLUS", written by my late mother, Fran Levin Bowman, who was a big name in the field, as my manual.
I would informally assess the student (cannot make an official diagnosis), but to determine where in the program to begin with them.
It's a multi-sensory approach including phonological awareness, review of previously-learned sounds, model/trace/copy/memory format for learning a new sound linkage, followed by practice reading and writing words and sentences containing the new sound. Fluency training is also incorporated in the lesson.
Learning the six types of syllables as well as irregular/sight words and prefixes and suffixes are all taught in a multi-sensory approach, too.
Additional written language training is a separate thing that I also provide tutoring for.
