About RJ

I've been tutoring since I was 16 - first classmates and kids in my community, later as a TA for college courses - and that long arc taught me the most important thing about this work: a tutor explaining a concept well is rarely what moves a grade. What moves a grade is whether the work actually happens between sessions.

Most tutoring is two hours a week of someone explaining things clearly. That's necessary, but it isn't sufficient. It's why students plateau even with a good tutor. My job isn't only to make calculus or chemistry click in the moment. It's to build the structure that keeps a student doing the right work, consistently, when I'm not in the room. That's the part that compounds into a better grade.

My background: a Duke undergraduate degree, a master's from the University of Florida, and 5s on every AP exam I took, including Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Statistics. Before tutoring, I worked as an engineer, so when a student asks the fair question "when do I ever use this?", I can answer truthfully - I've used this math to build real things. I've worked with every level from middle-school foundations through advanced high school and college-prep STEM, and I've been on every side of the desk: the student, the peer tutor, the college TA.

I'm patient, and I'll meet a student exactly where they are — including two chapters back, if that's where the real gap is. But I'm also honest, and I'll hold them to the reps. Confidence in math and science isn't something you're born with or without. It's the reliable result of doing the right work often enough that the hard thing starts to feel ordinary.

(My full name is Rajat — but everyone calls me RJ.)

Levels: Middle School through Advanced High School / College Prep STEM

Each session works on two layers.

The first is the obvious one: we go through your current class material, homework, and practice problems, and I break every concept down until you understand the reasoning, not just the steps. Memorized steps collapse on an unfamiliar exam question. Understood reasoning holds up.

The second layer is what actually changes outcomes. You'll leave each session with a clear, finite set of practice - the right reps, not busywork and not an overwhelming pile. Mid-week, I check in. At the start of the next session, we look at how it went. None of this is heavy, but together it does something a once-a-week explanation can't: it makes consistent practice the norm instead of the exception. A student doing steady, focused work will outperform a "naturally gifted" student who only works when inspired. Every time. That's not motivation-speak, it's just how the subject rewards effort.

What a typical lesson looks like:
• We diagnose what's actually confusing - often a gap further back than tonight's homework.
• I teach the concept until the reasoning is solid, working on a digital whiteboard so you see it built step by step, like a classroom.
• We set the specific practice for before next time - and we follow that thread, session over session.
• Sessions stay focused and calm. Every question is welcome; there's genuinely no such thing as a dumb one.

If you've felt stuck or frustrated, it's almost never because you "can't do math." It's usually that the material got built on an incomplete foundation, or that practice was inconsistent. Both are fixable - and that's the whole job.

Details

Every new student starts with a free 30-minute consultation. It's not a sales call and it's not a rushed half-lesson - it's a working diagnostic. We'll spend it three ways: you (or your student) tell me where things feel stuck; I work through one real problem with the student so you can see how I teach; and I lay out specifically what I'd focus on and how the between-session practice works. By the end you'll have a clear, honest read on what's actually going on, even if you decide not to continue.

Sessions are $40/hour. For students who want steady, ongoing support (which is where this approach does its best work) I offer prepaid packages: 5 hours for $185, or 10 hours for $350. The packages cost less per hour, but more importantly they commit a student to the consistency that actually produces results: regular sessions, structured practice in between, and enough runway to see a real change in grades and confidence.

Whatever you choose, the structure is the same: focused sessions, the right practice between them, and steady progress you can see.
