I prefer a more hands-on approach to teaching music as well as emphasizing repetition when needed. I also find that is important for music students especially to engage in listening and reading music. To stress both, I have students read music before playing it, often encouraging students to use solfege or humming (or fingering notes on the bass) while reading through it the first time. This helps when actually going through pieces with the voice or bass.
