My methodology is simple, first learn to the basics of a topic then you can solve the hardest of hardest problems of a topic. A lot of Teachers run after tricks, i am neither a big fan of them, nor entertain them. Tricks are time saver but if a student knows the basics, he can create lots of tricks himself.
