About Elise
I am a 6-8th grade ELA teacher. I also teach 7th grade social studies, 6th grade creative writing, 7th grade public speaking, and 8th grade journalism!
Before I was a teacher, I tutored full time! I had students from 2-11th grade - all of them needed help with their reading skills. I was able to help my students gain a grade level in about 3-6 months, which is pretty awesome. I was also lucky to have amazing students I believe everyone can learn and everyone deserves a good teacher who believes in them!
Before I was a tutor, I was a paraeducator. I was able to help teachers adjust their assignments to fit my students' needs, collaborate with their teachers, and give individual student tests to measure their progress. I feel so blessed to have been able to start my career here, because it inspired all the rest!
Your first session will start with a conversation with the parent first. I like to talk about expectations, previous experiences, and what your child is working on in school. I’ll ask about grades, assessments, and ask you to share any resources you can that could help me develop a plan for your child.
After that conversation, I’ll meet the student, play some fun intro games, and help your child become familiar with how to use the online learning platform. I’ll also read a couple different texts with them to see how comfortable they are reading aloud and try to get a read (get it) on their reading level.
In the following sessions, we will focus on specific phonics or reading comprehension skills.
