My Teaching Method and Techniques
My approach centers on building strong foundations in grammar, literacy, and phonetics for English as a Second Language learners, combining the structure and discipline I developed over 20 years as a military instructor with techniques designed specifically for young ESL students. I use phonics-based instruction to help students connect English sounds to letters, paying close attention to pronunciation challenges that often arise when transitioning from a student's native language to English. Grammar is taught through clear, step-by-step explanations with lots of repetition and real-life examples, since ESL learners benefit from consistent practice and context rather than abstract rules alone. Literacy is built through guided reading, vocabulary development, and simple writing exercises, always scaffolded to match each student's current English level. My software engineering background also allows me to bring in visual aids and interactive digital tools, which are especially useful for ESL learners who benefit from multiple ways of processing new language.
A Typical Lesson Plan
A typical 30–45 minute lesson might follow this structure:
Warm-up (5 min): Phonics and pronunciation review — sounds, blends, or vocabulary from previous lessons
Grammar Focus (10 min): Introduction of a grammar concept (e.g., verb tenses, sentence structure) using simple, relatable examples
Literacy Practice (10–15 min): Guided reading or vocabulary-building exercise connected to the grammar focus, with comprehension checks
Application (10 min): Speaking or writing practice where students use new grammar and vocabulary in context
Wrap-up (5 min): Quick pronunciation or vocabulary review, positive feedback, and preview of the next lesson
What Sets Me Apart
What sets me apart is a rare combination of disciplined instructional experience and a technical mindset — 20 years training and mentoring adults in the military as an HR instructor, paired with a software engineering background. This gives me a structured, methodical approach to teaching grammar and phonetics to ESL learners, while remaining patient and adaptable to each student's pace and native-language background. Parents and students can expect consistency, clear progress tracking, and lessons built on patience, encouragement, and real communication skills — not just memorization.
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for ESL students ages 7–15 who are learning English as a second language and want to strengthen their grammar, literacy, and phonetics skills. This includes true beginners building foundational vocabulary and sounds, as well as more advanced students refining grammar structures and reading fluency. Lessons are adaptable across proficiency levels and can be tailored to a student's native language background, since certain sounds and grammar patterns are more challenging depending on where a student is coming from linguistically.
