About Alicia

I was born in El Paso, Texas but I was raised south of the border in Juarez, Mexico. My parents divorced when I was 8 years old, and my father remarried when I turned 18. The divorce of my parents made me a realistic person and I learned to solve problems since childhood. I consider myself a flexible person who accepts changes at any time. I accept constructive criticism and I am 100% responsible and reliable in team work. When I run into a problem I do not give up, I'm rather patient and constant when resolving the problem. I like to learn new things, even if they are not related to science. On a side note, I love to bake desserts and carrot cake is my favorite.
In my sophomore year at NMSU I volunteered to work under Dr. Scott’s supervision, he is a Medical Anthropologist. The research project took place at the St. Luke's Health Care Center at NM. I would interview and survey the patients on their experiences at the clinic and their perceptions of health care under the Affordable Care Act, in order to further improve the clinics treatment towards its patients. People from different backgrounds would go to the clinic, but most of the time they were Spanish speakers. I came to realize that being bilingual becomes really handy when it comes to health care at the border. I was able to translate for my research team and this helped me become closer to the other students that were volunteering at the clinic with me. I believe that being bilingual opened doors to a more diverse connection with other students.

About the lesson

In my last year of college I had to take Biology 101 as a requisite for my Genetics degree, I found this unnecessary since I had already taken upper biology courses. My roommate needed to take this course as well, so I ended up taking the lecture and workshop with her and two other friends. I was the only one with a science background, so I helped them study for the exams and we did the homework all together for a better understanding of the material. In the workshop I coordinated with the four of them so each one of them had a specific activity to maximize the efficiency of the group work. My roommate and I had a one to one session every Tuesday, I would answer questions and draw in blackboards so she could visualize the information. I believe that I was one of the factors that influenced that they got better than average grades and scores on the tests and assignments. Taking this class also helped me refresh old knowledge and made me a better tutor.
