About Emily
I am a student in my first year of studying BA Chinese at the University of Oxford. I am passionate about the language and Chinese culture and I want to share this passion with others! I've been teaching a nine-year old boy for nearly two years. Despite being so young and initially being a complete beginner, he has nearly completed the first part of the GCSE Chinese course and highly enjoys the lessons! His parents are thrilled with his progress and his enthusiasm for the language is clear. I am lucky to have benefitted from fantastic teaching both at secondary school and at Oxford, and therefore feel confident in delivering teaching that is engaging, thorough and structured.

I tailor my classes to the student in question by getting a sense for how they learn. For young students, I like using a wide variety of resources including videos, textbooks, workbooks, audio materials, revision tools and presentations. I think engagement and enthusiasm are essential to learning a language when you're young, and therefore I aim to cultivate enthusiasm through my teaching. With older students/adults however, I believe that the Oxford approach to teaching Chinese offers you a profound knowledge and understanding of Chinese syntax and semantics, which enables you to build upon strong linguistic foundations. I would therefore aim to emulate this, using resources that I have used, and using teaching techniques which I have benefitted from myself. However, I also know that the study of Chinese requires a great deal of independent revision and practice. I am able to recommend effective ways to consolidate your learning, enabling you to progress in your study of the language.

If I need to travel into London I ask that I am reimbursed up to the cost of £10/day. While the first lesson is free I ask that my travel costs are covered.
