About John
I’m an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder with a PhD in Spanish and Comparative Literature from Cornell University. I specialize in Latin American and U.S. Latinx literature, Indigenous studies, and border and migration studies. Over the past decade, I’ve taught a wide range of subjects—including Spanish language, academic writing, world literature, history, and ethnic studies—at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I’ve also worked as a writing tutor, academic director at three universities (Colgate, Syracuse, and Western Carolina), and curriculum designer, helping students sharpen their analytical thinking and communication skills. Whether guiding a student through an essay draft or unpacking a complex historical text, I create a supportive and intellectually rigorous space that fosters growth, confidence, and curiosity. As a college prep expert, I have also helped students write and apply their way to NYU, Tulane, Oxford, and others! Outside the classroom, I’m a published author, translator, and documentary filmmaker with a deep commitment to education, equity, and cultural storytelling.

Teaching Method and Techniques: I prioritize clarity, adaptability, and critical engagement. My teaching method blends Socratic questioning, scaffolded practice, and real-world application. I tailor sessions to individual student goals—whether they are working on a Spanish literature essay, preparing for an anthropology exam, or developing analytical writing skills. I draw on active reading strategies, visual and conceptual frameworks, and encourage comparative thinking to deepen understanding. For language and literature students, I focus on close reading, textual annotation, and cultural context. For writing instruction, I use models, revision-based learning, and rhetorical awareness to help students express their ideas with precision and confidence. A Typical Lesson Plan (Each session follows a flexible but structured flow): Check-in & Goals (5 min): Review previous material, assess progress, and identify immediate concerns. Core Focus (30–40 min): Deep dive into a central concept (e.g., narrative structure, grammar pattern, visual analysis) using exercises, discussion, and feedback. Active Practice (15–20 min): Guided application of concepts—through writing, problem-solving, or analysis. Wrap-Up & Next Steps (5 min): Recap key takeaways and assign a brief follow-up task or reading. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor: As a tenure-track professor with a PhD from Cornell University and extensive interdisciplinary teaching experience, I bring both academic rigor and accessibility. I’ve taught everything from general education courses to graduate seminars, and I know how to break down complex ideas without oversimplifying them. I care deeply about student confidence, and I tailor each session to support their intellectual and personal growth. Additionally, I center diverse perspectives—particularly from Latinx, Indigenous, and historically marginalized communities—which fosters inclusive, meaningful learning. My tutoring is ideal for: 1. High school juniors/seniors preparing for AP Spanish, college essays, or IB coursework 2. College undergraduates seeking support in Spanish, Ethnic Studies, Creative Writing, Literature, or Humanities 3. Graduate students needing feedback on papers, research design, or academic writing 4. Adult learners or professionals seeking to improve Spanish fluency, critical reading skills, or writing for specific audiences
