I consider the most important thing of teaching is to link theory and real world applications. I was a victim of theory-only teachers, especially in maths, and my mission is to allow the student to master theory while teaching him to solve real world problems. My teaching methodology is based on key steps: 1) Intuitive explanation of the maths topic 2) Real life applications. 3) Theory foundations: principles and demonstrations. 4) Examples related to these formulae. 5) Optional: more complex examples using coding (R and Python) Introduction of coding at point 5) is optional for the student but I think it helps to introduce the student to the future demands of the job market. I have a significant database of examples and materials that I use on these lessons.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

During my early years at the university I started helping high school students with science subjects. It helped me with the extra money and I realized teaching was something I enjoyed tremendously.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I focus only on the subjects where I have both teaching and practitioner experience such as corporate finance, maths, investment analysis, machine learning, data science and econometrics. I love all the subjects I teach and despite being good at other science subjects like physics or chemistry, I don't teach them as I think the student can benefit more from the subjects where I have both teaching and practitioner experience.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a couple of teachers that were very motivated and really invested in the learning experience of the experience. Nevertheless, I learn more from bad teachers as it really helped me to understand how not to manage students and keep them motivated.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience is the most important. Other good qualities such as subject mastery and speaking skills are also very important, yet these two without patience and understanding of the student's key learning challenges are not going to help much.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

There was a mother that approached me to teach his son how to trade stocks. Although she was offering an excellent rate per hour, I declined the offer. The kid was only 9 years old and I told the mother that he needs first to learn about school basic subjects (maths, science, history, etc) and enjoy the playground with other kids before learning about investing or stocks. She didn't like my answer.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Mostly to teach students with clear gaps in knowledge. For instance, an student lacking in mathematics building blocks (e.g. derivatives) willing to learn an advance topic on machine learning or econometrics for investments. The teacher needs firstly to ensure the basic mathematical skill-set is acquired by the student in order to progress to solve the original problem.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love the process of conveying knowledge about a subject I have theoretical and practitioner experience. Best yet, I love the times when I learn something new about a subject I taught many times in the past as the more you teach a topic, the more you understand it. To teach is to never stop learning.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I do believe my positive reviews are a reflection of my passion for teaching, patience, flexibility and focus on subjects where I have developed mastery at a scholar and practitioner level, which makes the whole learning experience great for an student looking for extra help.
