About Claire

Hello there!

My name is Claire, and I am an experienced tutor and soon to be first-year teacher!

I have spent the past two years working as a tutor for college students (mainly freshmen), and in that time have developed a love for guiding students in their own learning journeys. I was a history major in college, but (as any history major will tell you), this major requires far more than memorizing dates. I wrote countless papers, performed original research, and developed my skills as a communicator as well as a writer. My college career ended this spring with being named Co-Valedictorian of my class.

I am extremely blessed to have had a positive experience with education, but I have worked with many students for whom English, history, and writing were unenjoyable. I don’t lose sight of the reality that not every subject will be enjoyable for every person. However, I do think it is possible for a subject to become more engaging when the unique interests and goals of the student are taken into account. I make it my mission to find where their own experiences, interests, and talents will lead them so that our work together can be both productive and - dare I say it - fun!

About the lesson

My goals for every lesson are simple: to help each student develop their skills, meet their goals, and above all to find increasing enjoyment in learning!

I specialize in working with students in the 6th-12th grade who are looking for academic support in ELA, history/social studies, and writing. My lesson plans begin with some form of ice breaker, game, or discussion question, depending on the age of the student. Next, we will turn into the specific skill of focus of the day (such as reading comprehension or essay organization). Through discussion, exercises, and consistent review of prior material, I work with the student towards meeting their unique goals.

At all stages of our meetings, I like to focus on what the student already knows and does well! Seeking academic help can be nerve racking (I know from experience) and, in some cases, demoralizing. It is my earnest intent to make each student feel comfortable, confident, and engaged in our time together. I want them to meet their goals, but I also want them to walk away from each session feeling proud of themselves. I believe that this positive experience can go a long way in making learning and education the joy-filled experience it is meant to be.
