About Yell

My name is Yell Freeman, and I am an artist specializing in drawing, painting, sculpture and performance artwork. I've been making for as long as I can remember, and art has always played an important role in my life.

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Art with a focus in ceramics, alongside a Master of Fine Arts Degree with a focus in video/performance art, and a Master of Arts in curatorial practice.

I have spent the last 6 years working with artists, galleries and collectives in curatorial and administrative contexts. Though my professional life did not veer towards that of a working artist, I've never stopped making. I have an active arts practice outside of my gallery work, which includes working as an independent tattoo artist from my studio in Gowanus.

About the lesson

Strong artwork is visually engaging and dynamic - but it's not the subject itself that makes art strong, it's the way the subject is interpreted by the artist.

I believe that anyone can create powerful works of art without learning the traditional techniques. It's important to define YOUR visual language, and harness how you see/interact with the world around you.

Though, if it is the traditional techniques you'd like to learn, let's start there! I can offer lessons to help any skill level, including those just looking to experiment.
