About Johnathan
The firebombing of Edo in WW2 led to such horrific burning that it sucked all the oxygen out of the air within a 20 mile radius, not only creating a pressure difference leading to break-neck winds flowing in to fuel the fires, but leading to asphyxiations that killed most people and wildlife within the areas affected, even if they never felt the flame. This is because oxygen is one of the most reactive elements on the periodic table, which is also why it (along with methane) is one of the key features we look for on alien worlds when conducting electron-spectroscopy in the endless search for life on other worlds, as to maintain an atmosphere of oxygen, a planet must have beings capable of turning carbon-dioxide into O2 (photosynthesis). The only reason life on Earth evolved to rely on Oxygen, is because it is one of the most abundant elements in our galaxy. In fact, 4 of the 5 most common elements in the universe are organic compounds! This leads modern thinkers to believe that since life doesn't seem to be picky about what it is made of, life must be able to evolve in ways completely different than our own in different parts of the multiverse where other elements are more abundant. Though that depends what you consider living. . .
