About Matthew

Every person learns in a different way. Some are great at self-teaching, some require visuals, some need mnenomic devices or other memory tricks, some requre a hands-on approach, and some just need some simple one-on-one attention. I have a passion for working with children to find what method of learning works best for them, and then adapting my tutoring to that method. I also believe that learning is best accomplished through positive, friendly encouragement, and that children should be taught that it is ok to struggle with new information, and how to think critically and strategically to tackle new subjects.

I have had the pleasure of working as a Super CIT (counselor in training) at French Woods Festival, where I looked after a handful of children aged 11-13, assisted in their daily schedules, and helped them with any work required for their daily activities/classes. I also have experience working in childrens theatre: I was an adult performer in a childrens' production of "Pippi Longstocking" at Actor's Playhouse in Coral Gables, FL - tasked with the duty of looking after and assisting children in the cast, taking part in Q&A's with children who would attend the show on school field trips, and interracted in costume with the children in the theatre lobby after the show.

I also have leadership experience, having written and produced a 12-episode web series called "3rd Wheel", for which I cast all the actors, hired the entire crew, set up the shoot schedule, ran each day of shooting, worked with crew in post-production, and ran the series release premiere event, and handled marketing.

Other experience working with children: I have worked as a server in several family restaurants, and I also have experience twisting balloon animals for childrens' birthday parties.

I enjoy finding a way to take the information a student is learning in class and make it easier to understand and digest. I love seeing that moment when the concept clicks for the student, and everything make a little more sense. It's uplifting when I'm able to turn a student's attitude about the subject around because they feel more confident in their understanding of it.

I like to start by having the student explain to me what they understand of subject matter at hand.  Upon hearing their explanation, or inability to, I find the holes in their comprehention of the material, and work from there.  I then talk to the student and get to know them, and find out about how they learn, what kinds of activities or lessons they've enjoyed in class, what holds their attention, and what motivates them.  From there, I use the information I gather about them to explain the subject starting with its most basic elements in a way that is condusive to their learning style, and build from there.  If the student is still having trouble grasping the new information, I try different tactics and visualizations of the material until I am confident it is fully understood, before moving on.
