About Emily
Wrote my first *poem* as soon as I could write, which was early, so maybe 5 & possibly even earlier. I couldn't stop with poetry & short stories. Later, I dragged personal essay & memoir, delirious with all the ways one story could be approached.
I studied with The Workshop for Publishing Poets for almost 10 years - a weekly workshop for published poets, lead by Barbara Helfgott Hyett (renowned poet, teacher & mentor). The youngest by at least 20 years, I adored that community & the support that helped me develop my craft immensely. A small group traveled to Montolieu, France for a 2-week workshop - an unreal, compact creative growth experience.
In addition to Barbara, I have also been involved with a variety of smaller, shorter-term groups, with a smaller goal of accountability or sharing work.
All of this, lay the foundation for my professional experience as a copywriter for a hospitality art company, where I was responsible for all internal & external written communication. This included: social media marketing & copy for posts, monthly newsletters, point-of-contact for all clients, press releases, creative RFPs, creative marketing for award-winning design magazines, and unfortunately, obituaries & all related press releases, etc.
I've been a freelance Creative Marketing Copywriter, Copyeditor, Consultant for almost 10 years, and as an educator and private tutor for over a decade.
Writing is music when you feel confident in how to manipulate all the pieces & I'd love to help you with that!

Patient. Accessible. I am able to very quickly assess my student's comfort level & general vibe when it comes to learning, which helps me be able to jump right into the fun stuff, but also adjust the way in which I teach. Why would I want to teach someone in a way that they don't learn? That seems mean & ineffective. I prefer kindness & growth. I use humor to relate and engage students. I'm patient (saying it twice, because it's an honest, very important trait). You are learning new things or adding new elements onto a familiar subject, failure is expected. The environment in which I teach respects the failure process, one of the biggest life lessons that improv teaches. Learning is failing, until you fail less, until you can explain it to someone new.
I meet my students where they are, while pushing them just past their comfort zone - being very mindful of where their limit is. Never aggressive or disappointed with student's not understanding or knowing facts (that's my job). I respect every student, small to big, as if they were human (wait, they are) & expect the same respect in return. Talking down to students derails their learning & causes you to shut down, unwilling to learn (and of course, because the teacher is there for you, to support your journey, to guide you each time you fall).

*I offer a sliding scale*
If money is a dealbreaker, please do not hesitate to message me. I'd rather find a middle ground we are both comfortable with, than leave you without a tutor.
