About James

From an early age, outstanding teachers, professors, and editors taught me to be an exceptionally talented writer. I have used their invaluable guidance to become an award-winning journalist and author. In more recent years, I have returned the favor by helping students young and older to become better, more confident writers. I help them change from being passive to active readers, paying attention to the many techniques professional writers use to engage and entice their audience.

I teach my students techniques that elevate writing, such as varying sentence length and using "power words" that engage and even excite readers. I show them the importance of curiosity -- about life, about the world, about other people. And I help them understand that expanding their general knowledge base translates into deeper, more informed writing.

About the lesson

I have tutored students from 4 to 74. My approach is the opposite of one size fits all: I first determine a new student's skill/knowledge level and then devise an individualized plan.

I try hard to make our lessons enjoyable and even fun! Many students of all ages lack confidence, so I work hard to boost their belief in their abilities. As of September 2026, I am new to superprof.com, but my reviews on another platform, which I am happy to share, show that I am very good at establishing interpersonal relationships which take into account each student's background, personality, motivation, and skill level.
