About Colette

Hello! My name is Colette, and I am a certified history teacher with more than twelve years of experience helping students understand history, strengthen their writing, and build academic confidence. I hold a master’s degree in history and specialize in making complex topics clear, engaging, and approachable for learners of many different backgrounds.

Throughout my career, I have worked with a wide range of students including middle school and high school learners, homeschool students, college students, and adult learners preparing for exams such as the GED or HiSET. I currently teach adult education and literacy courses, where I help students develop the reading, writing, and analytical skills the

My approach as a tutor is rooted in the belief that history and writing should feel alive, understandable, and meaningful—not overwhelming or memorization-based. As a certified history teacher with more than a decade of teaching experience, I focus on helping students build confidence while developing strong analytical and writing skills. I have worked with high school students, homeschool learners, and adult students preparing for the GED/HiSET, so I adapt my teaching style to meet each learner where they are.

My teaching method focuses on clarity, engagement, and skill-building. Rather than simply giving answers, I guide students through the thinking process so they learn how to analyze information, structure ideas, and express their understanding effectively. For history tutoring, I break complex topics into clear narratives and connect events to broader themes so students can see the “story” of history instead of memorizing disconnected facts. For writing tutoring, I help students organize their thoughts, build strong thesis statements, and improve clarity and structure in their essays.

A typical lesson begins with a short discussion to identify the student’s goals or the material they are currently studying. We then review the topic together—this might involve analyzing a historical event, reviewing class materials, or examining a writing assignment. During the lesson, I model strategies such as outlining an essay, identifying key historical themes, or interpreting primary sources. Students then practice applying these strategies with guided feedback so they leave the session with stronger skills and greater confidence.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my background as both a professional teacher and historian. I bring real classroom experience as well as a deep knowledge of history and research. I also work regularly with adult learners preparing for high-stakes exams like the GED/HiSET, which has strengthened my ability to explain complex ideas in a clear, supportive way. Many students who feel overwhelmed by history or writing discover that the s
