About William

I have a B.A. Degree from Capital University, and from UCLA I have “Earned with Distinction” a Certificate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I have also earned a Certificate in Writing from Oxford University, and multiple Certificates for classes in Teaching English from the British Council.

As a teacher I have worked with a vast array of kids and adults, both privately and in academic settings: elementary, middle, high school, continuation, adult school, and as a guest lecturer at the college level. In addition to academic study, I have also taught chess (privately, at schools, and at Beverly Hills Adult School) to students from ages 4 to 87. I currently teach “Improv and Creativity for Teamwork” at LA’s Homeboy Industries, the world’s largest network of adult turnaround programs; this comprehensive class brings my improv training at Second City together with brain-storming practice, literature, lessons from history, moving guest speakers, and inspiration and reflection from many diverse sources.

In addition to my love of teaching, I am thrilled to be able to offer you the range of my career experience in other areas as well! In business I have worked as a reporter for the largest regional wire service in the U.S., as a radio news broadcaster, and as an executive in the field of marketing public relations.

I've written feature stories for the L.A. Times and the Huffington Post, and for other consumer and business trade publications. In the field of entertainment, I've worked as an actor and written screenplays honored in competitions - besides writing and producing an award-winning short film. I also produce and write for Flash Films International, a YouTube channel for writers, directors, and creatives.

About the lesson

Congratulations on deciding to improve your mastery of English - in speech and writing! May I share how I will work with you? I will first talk with you and get to know you and your goals. For example, are you most focused on business, education, social, or some other area? Are you looking to describe, explain, or even persuade? Are there certain formats that would fit your objectives best? Of course we will work on basics of spelling, grammar, and syntax. Then, based on your goals, I will offer you practical assignments geared toward achieving them. I am thrilled each time a student makes a breakthrough. I look forward to helping you express yourself better!

Michael, in the field of storytelling, you have unique experiences. I’ve only heard a portion of them so far, but they will fascinate listeners! We touched on a timely “hook”: the correlation of your international competition experience to the current Olympic Games. Building on that, you can add other life experiences. And sharing your story verbally can happen informally, or on podcasts, standup, TedX talks, and more. If you choose to write your story, it could easily transform into a “pitchable” story idea for print or online media outlets.
