About Spencer

Hi! My name is Spencer Stutenroth and, having graduated from Miami University with majors in Biology and Pre-medical Studies, I am now working to complete my Master's degree in Pharmacology at the University of Cincinnati. As a younger student, I often struggled with the manner in which information was presented. Oftentimes, each new topic felt distinct and I had difficulty relating different concepts. As a result, I relied on memorization, and, when the exams came around, I could not adequately apply the concepts. Later on in college, I realize that, while rote memorization may be effective in some cases, true comprehension of the material arises when I can fit various topics within the context of a bigger picture. By asking questions such as "How does X relate to Y?" and "What would happen to X if this occurs in Y?", I was able to build a broader understanding of the whole idea and apply it within various contexts.

I believe that when a student is struggling to understand a concept, it is largely because they are unable to place it into a coherent picture. The primary goal of my tutoring is to give students the tools to dissect new material and link it to a broader context. As a result, students are able to retain the information more easily and apply it in various situations. This strategy not only enhances test scores, but also provides a foundation for studying new material as they progress into more difficult courses.

As an older sibbling, I was often relied upon for tutoring. Whether it was math, science, or literature, I would sit down with my little brother at the kitchen table and, together, we would work through his understanding of the material. As we worked, I could feel his energy rise when he finally grasped a difficult concept. The realization that he was able to comprehend difficult ideas granted him confidence in his own abilities.

Many students, especially those who struggle to get good grades, feel like it is their own deficiencies that prevent them from performing well in school. Oftentimes, you hear things like "I'm just not very good at school" or "I'll never be able to do this". This reflection not only provides an excuse to slack off on work, but also damages their own self-image. By walking students through their own comprehension and providing them with an effective study strategy, they come to understand that it is their current perspective of learning that inhibits them rather than their own inherent flaws. I find meaning in my work as students begin to realize that they are capable of grasping the material, and, in turn, are capable of more than they previously thought. The ability to learn effectively is not an innate talent, but a learned one. When the student realizes this and works toward it, they find joy in accomplishing difficult tasks and confidence in their own potential. I enjoy tutoring because our ability to learn is closely linked with our view of ourselves, and, when learning is successful, we prove to ourselves that we can do anything.
