About Kenneth

I am certified to teach social studies from grades 7 to 12, and over the past four years, I have taught social studies in every single grade. I am experienced in teaching United States history, global history, government, economics, and current events. If you have a question about anything in secondary social studies, I will be able to help you!

I love teaching about history and social studies. What makes history and social studies different from other subjects is that it allows for students to learn about a wide variety of topics, places, and people in a variety of ways. Teaching history and social studies is similar to telling a story, and I love to give students a chance to discover different ways of learning about this story.

My youngest brother is autistic, and was diagnosed at the age of 2 when I was 8 years old. I grew up watching how my brother benefitted from receiving an education at an early age, which played a part in my motivation to become a teacher. I also always enjoyed being in school as a student, and had pictured myself as a teacher frequently. I enjoy teaching, as I believe teaching young people is one of the biggest impacts I can have on the world, as the young people I teach may go on to have a major impact in their community.

I graduated from Binghamton University with a bachelor's degree in history in December 2011, and from Stony Brook University in with a master's degree of arts in teaching in May 2014. I have taught social studies full time for the past 4 years. My first three years were in a private school in which I taught social studies in every grade from 7th to 12th grade, covering content in United States history, global history, participation in government, economics, and current events. This past year, I taught in a middle school in the New York City Department of Education.

When working with a new student, I try to get an understanding of the best way that the student learns and retains information. Rather than diving directly into content or a specific skill, I engage with the student in an effort to understand the student's strengths and weaknesses. Typically, my first session with a new student is a broad overview of content and skills while working to understand how the student best learns.

I have worked with all types of students. The private school in which I worked had a large foreign exchange program, so roughly half of the students in that school came from China and were English Language Learners. In addition, some of the students in the private school were dyslexic, meaning that I had to tailor my lessons for students at a variety of learning levels. This past school year, two of my classes were integrated co-teaching classes, where up to 40% of the students in the class had an IEP. Again, with this in mind, I modified my instruction and assignments to meet the needs of a variety of students.

A student that wants to hire a teacher to assist them with social studies should look for a teacher who displays passion towards the subject. As a social studies teacher, I know full well that history and social studies does not interest everybody, and that parts of history and social studies can be downright boring. Students should try to find a teacher that is passionate about history and social studies and who works to make history and social studies more interesting and exciting for students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should be honest with themselves and with their teachers about a number of things. Firstly, students should be honest with themselves about what they know, and what they do not know. Students who pretend to know all of the answers when they do not know everything are only hurting themselves in the long run. Students should also think about the particular skills in which they would like to improve upon. If a student does well on multiple choice assessments but struggles with writing, it would be extremely beneficial for the student if he or she was explicit with the teacher in describing self-perceived weaknesses.
