About Sol

I am a Caltech graduate who is currently retired from working as an engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. I am now working as a professional Math and Science tutor. I live in West Los Angeles. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, both obtained at the California Institute of Technology.:

I am very patient and methodical. A student's confusion or lack of understanding is dealt with in an empathetic and caring manner. The student quickly understands that I am there to help, not to judge. I relate to the student as a mentor. I will grasp a student's level of understanding, and present information tailored to that level. I also concentrate on viewing the subject matter from the student's point of view. I want to see what the student sees, and know what the student understands. I teach using that as a guide. I explain concepts in ways that are easy to understand, with analogies to scenarios that are intuitively clear. I have experience teaching student with learning disabilities. I find ways to present information tailored to a person's strengths. The tutoring sessions are interesting and easy.

Many of my students have raised their grades to A's. I believe that with the right guidance, any student can achieve success in any subject. First and foremost, I care about my students. Their success is what makes me successful. I treat all students with respect.

II get a lot of satisfaction in helping students understand new concepts.

After I retired from working as an engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, I started tutoring students. This was a natural application of my capabilities and experience.

I have a masters degree in Engineering and a bachlors degree in Physics, both obtained at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

I encourage a dialog to make the student comfortable, and to give him or her ownership of the tutoring process. I ask the student to describe what tutoring is desired, and I start my evaluation of the student with what was suggested. The tutoring then proceeds with explanations as needed, and sample problems to be solved.

I have worked with students at all levels of education - from grammer school to college. I even have had students who were not in school, but just wanted to learn math on their own.

Be prepared to study on your own. Do not rely on the teacher for all your needs.

Ask questions, and if you do not understand what is explained to you speak up and ask for clarification.

I worked with a student for 4 years who started out with D's in math. We worked hard together, and after a while he started getting A's in his classes. He was recently graduated from high school and accepted to the University of Southern California (USC).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out

How often does the student need to meet with the tutor, and for what length of sessions.

What are the specific needs that the student has - what topics need to be addressed during the tutoring sessions.

Does the time required for tutoring leave enough time for the students' other subjects and activities.
