About Jennifer

I have been devoted to English literature since attending a lecture my mother was giving when I was just three. I have spent the last sixteen years working in every level of education, from pre-school to post-graduate. I believe in making lessons fun and accessible - students who laugh are students who learn. My personal motto is that a day without learning is a day wasted and I love the collaborative environment of tutoring.

I have a Master's in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelor's in English Education from Mary Baldwin University. I spent five years as a TOEFL tutor with Chinese students, but also have extensive experience tutoring English with a wide variety of learners and levels. Besides tutoring, I have also worked as a proofreader, beta reader, and copy editor.

After deciding that my ultimate goal was to become a college professor, I threw myself into roles where I could get teaching experience. I volunteered as a peer tutor in elementary and high school, aided friends throughout college, and took on my first professional tutoring job when I was 18.

I prefer to do the majority of my work online - currently, mostly through Google Meets. I like to get as much information beforehand about what the student is studying, but I also like to get an idea of the things they already enjoy. Accessing related knowledge is much easier for the brain than creating it whole-cloth, so I try to get to know what interests my students and what methods will work for them. My work is primarily student-directed, collaborative learning.

I have worked with literally every variety of student - from daycare work to post-graduate. The majority of my students are either in middle school or college, as those two groups frequently need the most help with literature.

Look for a teacher you click with. Every person has different things that catch their interest and attention, and if you are struggling in a subject, find someone who can make it clear in language that you understand and relate to.

For my birthday last year, I and several of my closest friends attended a fundraising fair at a local equine rescue. Seeing and supporting these beautiful animals - horses and donkeys, as well as goats and sheep - was a birthday dream come true. I spent hours petting and playing and just admiring the animals enjoying themselves on a perfect fall day.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What helps me remember things?
Is there a way of explaining that works better for me?
Is there anything specific that I can name as a problem area for me?
What do I hope to get out of these lessons?
