About Shawna

Learning is my passion and I believe everyone (regardless of disability) has the same equal rights to learn in ways that work for how they're brain is wired to learn. I have a PhD in Education. I also have a learning disability. I've struggled in math my whole academic career but was left unnoticed by teachers and other professionals. It wasn't until a quantitative analysis class during my PhD did an instructure bring it to my attention that I may have a math learning disability! I understand the unique ways kids with ADHD learn. I have ADHD and I've raised two buys with ADHD- one who experienced a Montessori education in elementary school and switched to public school in middle school; while the other spent his entire education in public school with an IEP, on and off ADHD medication. I have experienced first hand the frustration kids and parents have with how the current school system is set up to teach students.

I absolutely LOVE when I see the lightbulb click inside the student's mind once they understand something!

I have a PhD in Education. My Masters Degree is in Education: Instructional Technology, and my Bachelor's Degree is in Writing.

About the lesson

Step one: Historical education overview- strength areas and struggle areas, any learning disability or mental health (i.e.: ADHD, Anxiety, or Depression, etc.) diagnoses. Conversation with student from their perspective: why is school such a struggle?

Step two: Figure out how they learn best (if they don’t know already)

Step three: Start with a class/assignment you do well and demonstrate how you would complete it

Step Four: Take a class/assignment you don't like and struggle in and through a discussion we determine where the block is (understanding, executing, breaking down, etc.).

Step Five: Start working with a learning modality that supports how the student learns. (i.e. if they are a kinesthetic learner for example --They are ‘tactile’ learners who use movement, testing, trial and error and a non-traditional learning environment to retain and recall information--they will fail miserably if only given a book of information to read and study from.
