About Kerstin
With a specialty in Shakespeare and drama, I love working with words. I believe words have the ability to empower students, whether that be through understanding what is being read or confidence in their ability to express themselves. I worked three years as a writing and speech tutor at the University of Mount Union. I am currently a Graduate Instructor at Texas Tech University where I study theatre pedagogy and performance.
I am a teacher at heart. Formally, I began tutoring 4 years ago and am now pursuing a graduate degree to teach theatre at the college level.
I have an undergraduate BA where I double majored in Communication Studies and Theatre with a minor in Psychology. I graduated summa cum laude with university honors. I am currently in the Performance and Pedagogy master of fine arts program at Texas Tech University, where I have gained experience running a classroom, grading written assignments, and working with students one-on-one.

In the first session, I want to learn who the student is, what their goals are, and what was the motivation behind pursuing tutoring. This is vital to understanding how to proceed. I am less concerned about academic assessment and more interested in establishing a connection and trust between the student and I. Working with deficiencies can be intimidating and vulnerable, it is important to the work to be able to feel comfortable in the environment.
You want someone you feel comfortable with and who doesn't make you feel nervous or ashamed. They should be there to help you learn and grow, not put down the work that you have done.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do you really want to get out of tutoring? How can this skill help you outside of the immediate class you are in? It's easy to want a quick fix, but there are long-term benefits to really understanding what you are learning outside of passing an exam.
