About Kate

I have a BA in Special Education and an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Intervention and Family Support. I have been teaching/tutoring for over 20 years. I've worked with kids that just need an extra boost to help those meet their IEP goals. I am firm but kind and believe everyone is capable of reaching their highest potential should they want to. As someone who has a learning disability, cerebral palsy, and chronic pain disorders, I strive to be the best me I can be and I want to help others the same way. I am also a coach for those with chronic pain disorders/illnesses. I am a helper by nature and I am not a quitter. I hope you'll take a chance on me.

I love seeing the lightbulbs go off in students' heads. I love it when they realize that they understand what they were struggling with before. Seeing the satisfaction on my student's face confirms the reason as to why I tutor.

I've known since elementary school that I wanted to be a teacher. After attending a summer camp that had a special needs component, I knew at 13 I was going to be a special educator. I am so proud of that title. I started with tutoring, majoring in school, multiple internships and subbing during school breaks.

I begin by getting to know my students, how they respond to things by actions or words. I'm told that I am gentle, kind, and firm. I've always loved being around kids and they enjoy being around me as well. I might start simple with a game using knowledge from caregivers as a way to break the ice. We then slowly begin on what's needed to be worked on.

I have worked with students who are severely disabled, moderately so, mildly and those that are neurotypical. I love working with children with special needs though as to me, the small increments they grow in are larger than the bigger increments those without disabilities make.

Don't go for what feels safe. Your opportunities for expanding your learning will be infinite if you are willing to go outside of your comfort zone. The worst thing that can happen is that it doesn't work, but you'll be glad you took the chance.

While still in quarantine mode, I had a socially distant dinner with my childhood best friend's parents. Sadly, my friend passed away years ago but it was wonderful to reminisce.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What am I struggling with most?

2. How can my tutor guide me so that I can do it on my own?

3. Never be afraid to ask for help.
