About Jack
I am a former plasma physicist with a Master's degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from UC San Diego. I received my Bachelor's in Physics from UCLA before that, and I worked at a national science facility for two years as a student research scientist as well. Since graduating from UC San Diego, I also really enjoyed my time substitute teaching 6th graders. I feel most fulfilled when I work with another person on learning concepts together, and helping each other learn when one of us is having trouble. I think this makes me an outstanding tutor, because I know that even teaching is not a one-way relationship. You help me understand how to help you, and you know yourself best. And, I have the tools to help build the knowledge you need in your mind, to succeed the way you want to in this world.

Having trouble with the way your school's textbook or teacher explains math to you? Do you want to try a different way of thinking about numbers and why they even matter? Do you want someone who is passionate and fun to work with? Who understands that each of us is unique, and learns in different ways? I tailor our sessions to understanding how you and your brain work best, and how you best learn math. We take some time in the beginning to build this understanding together. You can show me what homework you have to do, and what new ideas your class is supposed to be teaching you. Then, we break those ideas down into pieces that make sense. We make it fun, and we make it funny too! We learn best when we enjoy what we are doing. I know lots of math, all the way up through "multivariable" calculus and "linear" algebra at university level. BUT, I really enjoy working with middle schoolers and teenagers, and doing the basics with people. Math does not have to be fancy or complicated to be joyful. I look forward to learning with you! :)
