About Anubhav

I am a Computer Science who always wanted to teach. I started with local classes. Went on to work for a United Nations Development Program. I then worked at a University in Chile and currently working out of my home. I love it.

Some of my career highlights:

At Liceo Republica del Brasil, the passing percentage in the SIMCE exam increased by 43% during the first semester for English subject.
At UACH, I spearheaded the English club on life skills. Topics included ‘How to sell the YOU in your story’ etc.
Led an initiative for students to take charge of all the events in the school instead of Teachers. Our efforts paid off at the end of the semester
when we organized the first-ever English Day in the 80-year-old history of the school.
Leveraged technology and Google tools to effectively teach students about learning from a digital perspective. That training is helping them
this year after everything went online.
Proactively led conversations with 50+ students to increase the organizing of English language events in the school and focus on promoting
the language. The result- The radio of the town broadcasted the entire English day and two weekly classes from the school.

My life and experience haven’t been filled with industry keywords. The roles I’ve had have mostly been created by me, or for me, nearly all upon a recommendation from someone I worked with. I know it says more about the people I worked with, but that’s the key. Rarely have I been qualified for the jobs that I’ve applied to or have had, but I love to justify people’s trust in me because I care for people and the job.

I use lots of techniques in my classroom. I make sure that my students feel comfortable in the class right from the start and body language plays an important role in that regard. I love the teacher talk. Changing my voice and speed depending on my students gives me so many more responses. Most of the students are beginners so I use reduced grammatical forms so students can recognize them and I do make use of action and TPR to enable student responses. For example, my class has a unique handshake style along and my students love it. I do make use of a classroom rules chart and classroom management system from day 1. My students know the rules and thus they are less distracted as rules remain the same throughout the year. With the classroom management system, I have divided them into superhero groups and I give them certain assessment points based on behavior, performance, teamwork, etc after every class and they win rewards based on the same. Thus, they actively participate and in fact, motivate each other too. I make use of ‘Scaffolding’ with modeling behavior in the class and lots of guided and independent practice.

I make use of 80/20 rule as this helps my students to grasp the information effectively. My classes are based on a few sets of words from the language however through Guided and Independent practice activities, we make sure to learn to use them in the practical world with ease. This is important as my student won’t feel confident enough to use the language outside or inside the class if they don’t get to do enough practice on what we have learned. Mostly, my students enter my class in sleep mode. To wake them up I play late WWE theme songs and enter like famous wrestlers. This catches their attention and I start with our unique handshake and one short 30 seconds exercise which gets them moving as it gets really cold in winters in the south of Chile and there is no central heating. My classroom management system already has them motivated for my classes and it also makes sure that they motivate
each other too. I use warm language in my classes as students can feel demotivated easily. I always use repetition and create a positive environment for making mistakes in the classroom by giving them more points on participation rather than the correct language. I also try to be part of my classroom as much as I can. Even during Independent practice, I make sure students can use me in the classroom. For example: During a lesson on clothes we did an activity where the students were divided into two teams. One member from each team had to pick up a piece of paper with vocabulary related to clothes and run and pick the relevant article from the table and put it on the body of ‘Freezing Ninja’. Well, I was the ninja in the activity. Students loved dressing me up with all sorts of clothing.

I generally evaluate my students in two stages. Once during the ‘Independent Practice’ stage and second before they leave their class. I generally ask my students to produce the vocabulary we have learned during the class in the form of an answer to a question that I generally discuss with them during the Objective Stage. This answer is their ticket to leave the class.
