About Michael
Greetings my intellectually curious kinfolk! Professor Yellin here with a brief intro to my life story (Check out the full biopic coming to Netflix in August). I sweated my way through three degrees in English, including a PhD from Lehigh University in 2007, and I've been teaching at the college level for almost 25 years. My areas of expertise include composition, American literature, American history, Black American literature, ethics, and film studies. Naturally, I love reading literature, but I also have a soft spot for international mystery novels such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I am a music aficionado who loves everything from opera to reggae--with a whole lot progressive rock in the middle. I am married with two teenage daughters. (Pause for expressions of pity) In addition to reading and listening to music, I enjoy walking my dog on forest trails, skiing, creative cooking, exercising, and writing bios that don't sound like they were written by ChatGPT.

Teaching students to engage with the written word in our age of distraction poses quite a challenge; however, it has been my career passion for over 25 years. One of the greatest compliments I have ever received was in an email from a former student who said that after taking my class she surprised her parents by asking them to stop by their local library to check out some books. This response sums up why I teach. Over the years, my techniques and strategies have evolved, but I remain rooted to 3 principles: 1) Relevant readings generate lively discussions; 2) The best way to learn how to write is to write early and often; 3) Every student deserves a voice. What do Taylor Swift, Michio Kaku, Angie Thomas, George Orwell, and Margaret Atwood all share in common? Their words have found their way into my classroom. I believe students should read texts that speak to their lives. Sometimes, as in the case of a sonnet by William Shakespeare or a story by Edgar Allan Poe, students may need a little prodding to hear these texts speak, but that is a challenge I gladly undertake.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Michael is an example of what Donald Graves thought a writing teacher should be: someone skilled at both writing and teaching. He is not only an exceptional writing teacher, but also an exceptional literature teacher. He has many years of experience working with students at different skill levels and age levels, but what makes him truly exceptional is the way that writing and literature matter to him. The words we write and the words we read define who we are and who we want to be, and in Michael’s classroom students learn the tools they need to harness that power. When he talks about great classroom discussion his class has had, or a student’s impressive growth, it’s clear that his heart is in his work. Students who learn alongside him have the privilege of learning with a true expert in the field, in a classroom filled with opportunities to engage with all the ways language brings meaning.
