About Jim

Hello! I am Jim, a coach for IELTS Speaking and IELTS Writing with five years of experience as an IELTS Practice Examiner. I have helped, than 1,000 students improve English strengthen exam skills and reach target IELTS band scores.

My teaching style blends exam strategies, feedback and real speaking and writing drills. I use an IELTS question bank that focuses on Chinese student needs. This lets learners practice topics that match the exam and get used to its format.

I know that each student has strengths, weaknesses and goals. That is why I tailor lessons to level and target IELTS score. I help improve fluency, vocabulary, grammar and essay structure step by step.

My goal is not to give answers but to help you share your own ideas naturally confidently and clearly. With patience, practice and helpful feedback I guide you to become a confident English speaker and reach IELTS goals.

My Teaching Approach

Hi! I'm Jim, IELTS Speaking and Writing coach with 5 years experience as an IELTS Practice Examiner. I've helped over 1000 students improve their English, develop their exam technique and get to their target IELTS band scores.

My Teaching Methods and Techniques

My lessons are all about practical skills, individual feedback and progress. For IELTS Speaking I help students come up with natural, fluent answers using the right vocabulary, the right linking words and techniques to develop their ideas. For IELTS Writing I teach students how to structure an essay, how to present a clear argument, how to use accurate grammar and how to back up their ideas with appropriate explanation and examples.

I also use an updated IELTS question bank (specifically one geared towards Chinese students) to help the students get used to the sorts of speaking topics and questions that they're likely to come across. That way we can focus on the specific preparation that we need to do, and at the same time develop the language to be able to deal with questions they haven't seen before.

A Typical Lesson Plan

Each lesson is geared to your current level and your target band score. We typically start off by going over some of the previous feedback or working on a particular skill. We then move on to some IELTS speaking questions or writing tasks using exam techniques. I'll give you some examples, point out any errors and explain how you can improve your vocabulary, grammar, fluency and organisation. You'll finish the lesson with some practical feedback and clear goals for what you need to do next.

What Sets Me Apart

As an IELTS Practice Examiner I know the criteria and what students need to be able to do in order to achieve a good score. I bring that experience to the teaching, combined with a very patient and supportive approach and the use of bespoke lesson materials.

Having worked with so many Chinese IELTS candidates I know very well what the problems are that students have when they're trying to put their ideas across in English. My job is to get students to go beyond just learning the answers by heart and to actually learn how to generate their own ideas, how to use natural language and how to speak more confidently. It's about helping you to understand your errors and to make real progress.

Who My Lessons Are For

My lessons are ideal for beginners through to advanced level English learners, particularly Chinese students on the IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. If you're looking to work on your Speaking fluency, your Writing structure and grammar, your vocabulary or simply to boost your confidence in general then I'll tailor each lesson to your individual requirements and your target score.

Whatever your target is (Band 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 and above) we'll work through it together via targeted practice, detailed feedback and the right strategies to get you to your IELTS goal.
