About Lauren

My name is Lauren and I have been a student and tutor for close to 10 years. I spent 6 years in the United States Army, where I started working on my first bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. After completing my first degree, I wanted to learn more about biology, so I went back to school to complete a second Bachelor's in Biology, which I finished in August 2020.

Throughout my time as a student, I developed a passion for tutoring. I started by tutoring fellow college students in the areas of biology, chemistry, and organic chemistry. When my children became school age, I chose to homeschool for a semester, where I discovered that I also enjoyed tutoring kids. I liked the challenge of adapting my teaching styles for various age groups. I have some great tools and experience that I am excited to use as a tutor and help inspire kids, teenagers, and adults to excel in their learning journey.

About the lesson

I like to use a personalized approach to teaching students. For math and science-related content, I like to walk the student through an example problem that is similar to a particular problem that they are having issues with. Once I walk through the problem, I ask the student if they have any additional questions before attempting a problem on their own. I ask that the student walks me through the problem they are solving and I will provide any guidance as necessary. This approach is student-led where they can increase their understanding of a particular subject by verbally demonstrating the subject matter, while I remain available through the whole process for answering questions and providing guidance.

When students have general questions about the subject matter, I will help them figure out exactly what questions they have. I will then review the material myself, and provide some context about the subject. This way, the student can understand the big picture, before digging deeper.

I also provide assistance with organizing ideas for writing assignments. If a student has a hard time getting started with a writing assignment, I will help them develop the main theme of their paper, and guide them through developing a thesis statement, and some sub-topics to support the thesis. I also review papers and provide feedback on improvements/suggestions to improve the context, mechanics, spelling, and punctuation. I will provide tools to the student that will help set them up for success.

I cater to students of all ages ranging from elementary school through college. I have a dynamic teaching style that is catered toward the student's education level and subject matter to ensure the student receives high-quality tutoring that is age-appropriate and engaging.
