1. I believe that centering learning upon key intellectual questions helps students understand more comprehensively while facilitating profound critical and creative thought.
2. I strive to facilitate students’ autonomous and creative discoveries in my advising and mentoring relationships. I offer students freedom in learning environments that are relaxed, energy-rich, and egalitarian.
3. Students are most successful when they are offered diversity in approaches and materials and when we look together at their progress throughout a session or at multiple points across a period of time.
4. Successful teaching means balancing challenge with support. My students have universally described my teaching as a challenge to them, but they also found it both pleasurable and rewarding because I afford them opportunities to succeed and to find personal value and meaning in what they do, all within a framework of helpful, caring, understanding, and supportive mentoring.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Matthew is an excellent communicator and an even better educator. His Conflict and Abuse course has been a favorite of mine since taking it in college, wherein he demonstrated not only his ability to condense advanced, highly abstract material for a novice audience, but his adaptability to fit his expertise to meet the varied interests and talents of his students. Matthew's students thrive in the learning environments he fosters, where their curiosity and goals are met with the support of a brilliant guide.
I have known Dr. Bowker for many years. We've sat at conferences together, written (a bit) together and I've been reading his works as best as I can as they come out at a blistering pace. I've known him to have the kinds of qualities I admire in teachers - smart, invested, and kind. I'd recommend him highly.
Dr. Bowker was a true inspiration for me during my undergraduate time at Medaille College. His courses were always entertaining and full of value. Dr. Bowker worked with me personally many times while I struggled both academically and mentally. I thank him for believing in me and seeing me as an individual and credit a portion of my furthering education to his instruction ability and kindness.
I have worked with Dr. Bowker on an edited volume as a chapter contributor and feel really lucky to have had my writing in his care. In fact, care is probably the best word to describe his unique strengths as a scholar and professor.
