About Polly
- What kind of experience do you have?
I've taught across a range of settings for twenty years - in schools, universities, FE colleges and more recently, 1:1 in a tutoring capacity. My French and English students have received A grades in their assignments and exams. I've also run after school French clubs for younger children. Equally, I have experience of helping undergraduates to effectively structure their essays and offer in-depth critiquing of arts-based essays.
I teach French 1:1 and in small groups. Previously, I worked as a grammar tutor to undergraduates at the University of Sussex. I have also worked as a translator.
I've taught creative writing in Brighton and Leicester for various different employers, including Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, Writing East Midlands, Writing School Leicester, Saffron Arts and the University of Sussex.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
No
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied for my BA and MA at Sussex University and for the Award in Teaching and Training at South Wigston College. Currently studying Advanced Copy-editing with the Publishing Training Centre.

French and English tutorials offered in a fun, relaxed environment. Years of teaching experience across a range of settings: university, classrooms, FE and 1:1 tuition. Translation, professional and accredited proofreading and copy-editing.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English Literature, French and creative writing at all levels. I can help with essay writing up to postgraduate level.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a first class degree in French and spent many years living in France. I've worked as a tutor and translator and love teaching this fascinating subject. I offer after school French lessons, support with GCSE and A Level and conversation classes for people planning to move to France or wanting to learn French so they can communicate better while on holiday there. Lessons are fun and varied and tailored to individual needs - e.g. workshopping grammar points or practising pronunciation.
I hold an MA in English Literature and the Award in Teaching and Training. I love language and literature and communicate this enthusiasm in my teaching. Lessons are interesting and adapted to students' needs, e.g. help with close reading of texts to draw out the student's own observations on language techniques and possible meanings in preparation for essay writing; help with constructing essays.
I work as a writer and creative writing teacher at various locations in Leicester. A selection of my own original short stories will be published by Stonewood Press this year. I teach 1:1 creative writing sessions with a focus on fun exercises designed to get people writing and help editing stories, poems and novels.
I've received excellent feedback from former students for all three subjects. I teach GCSE, A Level and undergraduate sessions, supporting students with assignments, reading, or whatever they need help with at a given point. For creative writers, I offer literary consultancy, whether workshopping manuscripts or helping writers to discover their voice through personally tailored writing exercises.
I worked as an editor for many years and can proofread/copy-edit assignments and dissertations as well as offering constructive advice on essay structuring. Currently, I edit novels for an American fantasy fiction publisher. I have also completed the Introduction to Editorial Skills by the Publishing Training Company.
My teaching credentials include the Award in Teaching and Training.
- How much do you charge?
My fees are £30 an hour for French, English and creative writing tutorials at GCSE and A levels. I charge £35 an hour for university French / English and for proofreading and essay writing services.
- Where do you teach?
I teach from home in Oadby, Leicester, which is easily accessible from surrounding towns in Leicestershire like Oadby, Market Harborough, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, Nottingham, Derby.
- When are you available?
I am available daytime and evenings on week days and weekends.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
All ages and abilities.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I help students prepare for GCSE, A' Level and degrees in French and English.
