About Vanessa
My primary goal is always to help students improve their academic success and provide them with a foundation that they can build on in the future.
I am particularly passionate about education equity and the idea that all students should be given the best opportunity to succeed. Public K-12 education in the US is often overcrowded and leaves no space for creativity or individualized learning. I approach tutoring from the individual perspective, and encourage students to think about mathematics, writing, and test prep from creative angles that lead to a more profound understanding. I find that this makes learning adaptable to career and life skills.
I received a minor in Mathematics from UCLA, and have tutored primarily middle and high school students in topics ranging from pre-Algebra to AP Calculus BC. Due to my studies at UCLA, I can also tutor several college courses including linear algebra, introduction to C++, and more. (I also am comfortable working with younger students, as I have taught music lessons to ages 7 to 12, and developed education programs for Cayton Children's Museum catering to ages 3 to 10).
My own experiences with writing and public speaking led me to receive more than $7000 worth of private scholarships and grants throughout my undergraduate degree, as well as being selected as the Undergraduate Commencement Speaker for UCLA's School of Music in my graduation year. I have used these skills to help edit students' writing and successful submissions for scholarships.
I also offer test prep for SAT, ACT, AP and other exams or stressful situations. My own scores on these exams were all close to the maximum score available, and my experience with preparing for test anxiety or performance anxiety offers a unique perspective due to my music performance background.

My primary goal is always to help students improve their academic success and provide them with a foundation that they can build on in the future.
By asking my students what their goals are, I tailor my approach to keep them engaged and always working towards their goals.
When you have your first tutoring session with a teacher, ask yourself whether you feel supported and welcomed by them.
Feeling comfortable with your teacher is essential so that you can be confident in asking questions when you need something explained or don't understand a topic yet.
