About Nicole
I have a BA, MA, and PhD in sociology. I have worked in higher education since 2009 at three community colleges and two four-year universities. I specialize in teaching Introduction to Sociology, Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration, Social Psychology, Gender, and Qualitative Methods. I have tutored first generation students, ESL learners, and student-athletes in the Mountain West and Midwest. In addition to teaching land-based courses, I have also taught online courses at two colleges.

The classroom transforms students’ and instructors’ relationship to knowledge and learning. Instead of treating students as passive receptacles of knowledge, I regard them as capable of making valuable contributions to the learning process. In all classes, I connect students’ prior information and experiences to sociological frameworks to inspire students to be more actively engaged in the world around them. In a classroom students learn to challenge pre-existing ideas, articulate new thoughts, and participate in intellectual discourse with their professor and peers. To accomplish this, I utilize strategies that reflect the diverse learning styles of my students: comprehensive lecture slides incorporating text, images, and discussion questions, documentaries, thought-provoking class activities, multiple reflective essays, and group projects. Together, these help students develop written and oral communication skills and a higher level of professionalism in the classroom.
