About Neil
As a self-employed peripatetic teacher, I teach individual, group and whole class music lessons for children of primary and secondary school age. Content caters for beginner to advanced levels. Instruments taught include the descant recorder, trumpet, cornet, tenor horn, horn in F, baritone, trombone, tuba, flute, clarinet and saxophone.
I also have experience working for the local music service. As a staff member of Gloucestershire Music, I was involved in a range of music activities. As part of a music centre, I delivered the Gifted and Talented (formerly First Access) scheme for beginners to brass instruments, ran senior theory classes and was involved with other groups.
As a Whole Class Ensemble Tutor (WCET), I taught music and brass playing in a whole class setting. I take up to 34 trumpets into a classroom and deliver a 10 – 30 week unique scheme of work to children. The role requires strong organisation skills, appropriate classroom management and the ability to differentiate material effectively.
I also have experience running a brass ensemble within a private secondary school.
I have played music since I was a child and acquired a Master of Art while studying at Cardiff University. At university, I performed as the Principal Trumpet within its orchestra and more recently have played for local community wind and jazz groups and in pit ensembles for music theatre productions. I am always looking for new ventures and am now part of a soul/funk/ska group called 'The SoulSkunks', performing regular gigs at various venues.

I am a peripatetic music teacher specialising in brass tuition for children and adults. I also teach beginner clarinet, saxophone, recorder and flute lessons.
I believe in taking an active approach to music lessons. This means the student is very much an active participant. The student will not only learn in a traditional manner by reading notation through teacher-led activity but will be encouraged to move, play visual and sound games, compose, and explore the sound-world of the instrument in an attempt for the student to construct an interest and passion for music as well as in their instrument of choice. I want to help develop creative musicians with strong musicianship and encourage individualism in addition to fostering effective communication and cooperation in pupils. The study of music develops many skills, transferable to many walks of life, and it is my role as a tutor to try and create a safe learning environment where these skills can germinate and grow.
Having a pupil play as soon as possible is always the best approach to music tuition. Sound should come before symbol. My teaching explores different styles and types of music. Through individual practice, demonstration and performance, confidence is promoted early on.
My teaching style is approachable, fun and friendly; encouraging rather than draconian.
Rhythm is the root of a lot of music and, although learning notes and theory is addressed from the very first lesson, a focus on musicality promotes individualism and self-confidence faster than being overloaded with information too quickly. Once confidence and enthusiasm are gained through rhythms and intonation it is important to come by pupil-central (and achievable) goals - be them examinations or the desire to learn particular styles of music. Learning is progressive and based on individual needs.

Neil is an absolutely great teacher - been taught by him for so many years and the amount of knowledge and proficiency he has on the Trumpet has helped me understand the instrument, and how to improve, so much better. Super friendly and easygoing, couldn't recommend him enough.
