About Rupam
I am currently a researcher of biostatistics at the UM, and as a part of my appointment here I have been involved in teaching statistics and biostatistics (along with preparing teaching and project materials) to undergrad and grad students during the last five years. I have prepared short courses on introductory probability and linear algebra for undergraduates and more advanced course materials on statistical inference and generalized linear models for graduate students. In parallel, I have tutored several students from both in and outside UM in topics ranging across math, stat, probability and R computing. Teaching has been my passion since my school days, even when I was not acquainted with the research side of the academic life. Wyzant provides me with an opportunity to spend my free time in a productive way - I see it is a chance to grow as an instructor myself. I am looking forward to meeting you on this platform!

I follow a tutoring method where I allow my students to explore potential solutions to a problem at hand by themselves first, and try to guide them towards choosing the simpler and elegant ones based on intuitive and questful thinking. In particular, I like to distribute my tutoring time in roughly a 20-30-50 split - where the first 20% of the time is for the student to describe the problem and their thoughts on it by themselves, the next 30% is for me to describe my thoughts and possibly useful approaches, and the rest is for the both of us to work on the solution together. For lessons that are more driven by learning and less by targeted solutions to specified problems, I try to combine the teaching with practice questions and examples to make sure the student has a transparent assessment of their newly learned skills and be confident of the acquired knowledge.
