About Lillian

During my undergraduate career, I graduated with a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing while remaining on the Dean's Honors List. I spent three years as a Writing Assistant, tutoring university students, supporting faculty in course development, and helping writers discover and refine their voices. Beyond the classroom, I worked as an Editorial Intern for Catamaran Literary Journal and later as the Youth Poet Laureate Program Intern, where I combined writing with mentorship, event coordination, and community engagement. My creative work was recognized with the George Hitchcock Poetry Prize in 2025, and my writing was published in Catamaran Literary Journal and other literary magazines. Together, these experiences reflect the path I hope to continue following—as a writer, tutor, educator, and lifelong student committed to helping others find their voices while continuing to develop my own.

I am a poet first and foremost, more so than an essayist. However, this did not keep me away from essays. During my undergraduate years, I took graduate-level classes for thesis writing. I learned I was a terrible writer, particularly at mechanical writing. This challenge made me want to perfect the craft of essays, theses, and dissertations. I began tutoring college students in my second year and had tons of fun engaging with their work. Hearing student voices and supporting their learning made me a compassionate, interested academic. I started reading more, asking more questions, and engaging with students in my classes.

Having a teaching opportunity made me a better student, and this eventually carried over into my career plans. I will want to teach forever, wherever, because the learning never ends for me! It is somewhat selfish.

I engage students with their personal voice. In poetry, the idea of “voice” is extremely important in the craft. It is the same in academic or more structural writing. It is important for me, as the tutor, to ask the student questions about their intention and what they are attempting to say, and to make their thoughts clear and grammatically accurate.

This is what I do in poetry, and it carries over into academic writing. I am able to help with the reading comprehension of challenging literature or texts. I have helped students by asking them to read their own texts or other texts outlaid, for them to better understand what is being said. I love it when students bring in content before a session; that way, we have a goal and can complete it by the end of the session.

Though it is typical for students to bring in nothing or not know what to bring, this is a good start, too. I love brainstorming with students, asking questions, and learning from them! They are my teachers as well; I don’t believe in the dichotomy of authoritarianism in my teaching. Though I am in a position of power, I believe we are equal in learning; a student informs my teaching, and I share my knowledge of a subject.
