About Andrew

As a high school English teacher and doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership, I combine rigorous academic training in philosophy with hands-on classroom experience to help students become confident, critical thinkers. My Master's in Philosophy from San Jose State University provides me with deep expertise in logical reasoning, argumentation, and textual analysis—skills I translate into practical strategies for analyzing literature and constructing compelling essays. I'm passionate about equity in education, serving as an NCTE "This Story Matters" Teacher Corps member and conducting dissertation research on AI and educational inequities. This commitment means I create inclusive learning environments where all students' voices and perspectives are valued and strengthened. What energizes me most is watching students make breakthroughs—whether finally understanding a complex text, crafting a powerful thesis statement, or discovering their own analytical voice. I bring the same mentorship approach that helped me coordinate international programs and guide students to college success. Beyond teaching content, I help students develop metacognitive skills, college readiness, and the intellectual confidence to tackle challenging material independently. My goal is not just to improve grades, but to cultivate lifelong learners who think critically about the world around them.

My lessons focus on building essential skills for academic success: close reading, literary analysis, argumentative writing, and critical thinking. Each session is tailored to your specific needs—whether you're struggling with AP English essays, preparing college applications, tackling challenging texts, or refining your writing for undergraduate courses.

I use a collaborative approach where we work through real assignments together. Rather than simply correcting your work, I teach you the analytical frameworks and writing strategies that make you an independent, confident learner. We'll examine how to construct compelling thesis statements, support arguments with textual evidence, analyze rhetorical techniques, and develop your unique voice as a writer.

Lessons incorporate contemporary, culturally relevant texts alongside classic literature, making connections between what you're reading and real-world issues. I provide detailed, constructive feedback on all written work and use a mix of discussion, guided practice, and independent application to ensure concepts stick.

Whether you need help catching up, maintaining strong performance, or pushing beyond standard curriculum expectations, my lessons meet you where you are and challenge you to grow. High school students gain the skills needed for AP exams and college readiness, while college students develop the sophisticated analytical and writing abilities required for undergraduate success. Every lesson is an investment in becoming a stronger thinker, reader, and writer.
