About Finley

Kia ora! My name's Fin. I'm a proud New Zealander and am currently a fifth-year student at Waipapa Taumata Rau (the University of Auckland), studying Law and Arts. I have lived and worked in China for a year, teaching English to students aged from three to thirteen years old. My happiest memories from that experience were seeing the plans I would make for each lesson come to life, and eventually getting to a point where I could adapt on the go and change the plan to fit the student's needs if need be. I am super passionate about our beautiful multicultural community here in Auckland, and love getting to meet all kinds of people through the one-on-one tutoring I do.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is student-prioritized. This means I will start off each lesson by asking you if you have any preferences for what we work on. Many students will bring something they struggled with in school, or say they want to work on a particular area, for example, parts of speech or spelling rules. However, if you don't have anything in particular you want to work on or you're not sure how you need to improve, I can help here too! Once I get a sense of your level I can provide useful exercises to help you work on any areas of weakness. My main experience is teaching English language. I am especially passionate about teaching English to the Chinese community as I taught in China for a year and am currently learning Mandarin (大家好)! But of course, I teach people of all levels and backgrounds- whether from primary school, high school or older. I also took NCEA English in high school so am very willing to take students who are studying that, too. I am super friendly, calm and totally dedicated to everything I do. I am very passionate about creating a safe, pressure-free learning environment where students feel like they can ask questions and learn with no judgment. I charge $30 for an hour session (though we can do 1.5 or 2-hour sessions as per request). For regular students (i.e., students who have a session with me weekly or fortnightly) I like to provide a 24/7 question-answer service, where you can get in contact with me to ask any burning questions that you have if you don't want to wait for the next session to ask them! Fin is a lovely tutor. He is super patient and calm. I feel totally un-judged by him, no matter how much I don't understand something>D. He creates such a lovely learning environment. He always makes sure our lessons are focussed on what I want to learn/need help with, which means that the lessons are tailored to my own needs. He is always happy to answer questions outside of class, which makes me feel really supported by him. He also explains things really clearly. I'd recommend him to anyone, no matter the area of English (he is also fabulous at teaching things outside his area of expertise).
