About Marye
My name is Dr. Marye Smith and I am a certified veteran teacher of 32 years with experience ranging from sixth-grade to college. Areas of concentration are ELA general, Honors, and AP. Currently, I serve as the Literacy Coach for high school students across all disciplines. I was the 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year. I hold endorsements in Coaching and in Reading, and I am the author of the book, Is There No Balm In Gilead: Healing for the Hopeless, Hurting and the Brokenhearted.
You can access more of what I can offer on Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube.
My teaching philosophy can be summed up in the following quote: “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” --Teddy Roosevelt (John Maxwell)
I started as a permanent sub because I had a passion for teaching. Though I worked for eight years in the retail industry as a buyer, when the opportunity presented itself, I started my journey that has lasted 32 years.
Currently, I serve as the literacy coach at a high school for which I serve teachers and students across all disciplines, and I hold endorsements in coaching and reading. Also, I co-created the ninth-grade curriculum for the Griffin/Spalding district using the Rigorous Curriculum Design (RCD) a model for designing or redesigning curriculum so that it truly represents a rigorous 21st-century set of comprehensive units.

The typical process for my working with a new student is to administer an assessment in the area of need to assess the weakness(es) and the strength(s) of the student. Next, I administer a learning style assessment, to be informed about the best way to proceed with instructional planning that fits the individual need of the student.
I have worked with students ranging from sixth-grade to college level; however, I prefer high school and older students, but I will consider younger ones.
Make sure you are willing to put in the time needed to be successful.
A recent event of which I am fond is having the opportunity to conduct a PL for some teachers in my district. I told the story of how a negative encounter with a former teacher and a positive encounter with another teacher both propelled me to become an educator. Some cried while others laughed. Some admitted that they too had been one or the other in the life of a student.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What do I need to be willing to give to get what I need?
2. Why do I need to have additional assistance in this area?
3. Did I get clear instructions from the teacher?
4. Did I give adequate time to the assignment?

I did not use this service. Mrs. Smith was my english lit teacher and she was the best teacher and worked with me and everyone else. She talks and gets to know and/or understand what youre dealing with or trying to figure out. Overall she was just a great teacher.
I had Dr. Smith as for my senior year of high school. She is refined, witty, and a well versed educator. To this day I still credit her as one of the best English professors I’ve ever had.
