About McKayla

Hiya! My name is McKayla Hoffman, and I welcome you to my tutoring page! Please read on below to learn a little more about me and Writing-for-All Tutoring.

Philosophy and Goals

Whether we are students, working, or are inspired to create written works as a past time, writing is an essential part of many of our lives. You may be writing a book report, research paper, novel, honors thesis, social media post/advertisement, or grant--and all require a knowledge of audience, grammar, sentence/paragraph structure, and more. Writing is fun--but kind of a lot!

While it's important to craft writing for your audience, genre, or purpose, oftentimes, our "authentic voices" are left out. This is especially difficult for those of us who speak and write in English as a second language. Writing can be a challenging, vulnerable venture for this reason.

In my tutoring sessions, I aim to:

1.) Get to know you and why you're writing,

2.) Understand what your goals are and co-create personalized strategies and practices to help you get there,

3.) See you as a multifaceted person with inherent worth and honor what makes you the writer you are while not discriminating on the basis of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, national origin, disabilities, and social location, and

4.) Get you feeling as comfortable with writing and embracing your authentic voice as possible!

About McKayla

It's great to meet you! My name is McKayla, and it would truly be an honor to help you on your writing journey.

For nearly a decade, I have been working in a variety of educational fields, tutoring English, French, Archaeology, and English as a Second Language. Later, I moved on to museum education, where I taught learned from 2nd grade on to college (and beyond!) about 18th century life in America, foodways, gardening, and much more. I worked in development for a museum and a independent school, writing grants, proposals, social media posts and advertisements, and many, many thank you letters to donors.

I missed tutoring and decided to come back to it after a few years doing professional writing. Helping others find their voice in writing and learning along the way is exciting and rewarding, and I am excited to return to it!

Whether we expect to meet one time or once a week, I look forward to:

- Getting to know students (why they have sought out tutoring, whether they are writing for school or as a hobby, and generally about them as a person!)

- Learning about the strengths and growing edges a student identifies in themself, and

- Co-creating a step-by-step plan you address any concerns about writing or an assignment(s). If we will be meeting regularly, I will review areas of strength and growing edges, as well as concerns about writing, and see how they feel they are meeting their goals.

I have worked with:

- Primarily with high school and college students (all) in a tutoring setting, and 2nd grade - college in a formal museum education setting,

- Neurodiverse students,

- Students who utilize assistive technology, and

- ESL/ELL students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student ought to feel open to share:

- "Whatever adaptations can be made to make a space (physical or virtual) more comfortable and conducive for learning for me?" Tutors want to make you as comfortable as possible so that you can have space to stretch your mind for the work that will be done.

- (If writing pertains to school work) "What don't I understand about a writing assignment after 1.) reading the requirements of an assignment before coming to a tutoring session, and 2.) asking my teacher any questions they have about the assignment?" Tutors (unfortunately) can't read minds, so try and get some of the answers to your questions that specifically relate to the assignment.

- (For ESL/ELL students) "Do I really need to learn how to write or speak English perfectly? How important is perfection in English to me as a student?" You may find that aiming for perfection prevents you from making connections that are important to understanding and communicating in English. Don't worry--a tutor is there to help meet you where you are, which is a place to celebrate!
