About Tanner

Students' comprehension is much higher when they discover new knowledge for themselves. This idea guides my tutoring style--I help students thoroughly explore difficult concepts, thereby creating a lasting understanding. This kind of learning sticks forever and ensures that students' new knowledge is malleable and can be easily applied to different situations.

Helping students to reach the point where everything "clicks" is the best part of tutoring work!

I first began tutoring students who struggled with math when I was in middle school. After scoring a 36 on the ACT as a junior in high school, I began to tutor in the other areas of the ACT test (reading, english, science) as well. The areas and topics that I am comfortable teaching have expanded throughout college.



I graduated from Brigham Young Unversity, summa cum laude, with a B.S. in economics. While in school, I worked as a teacher's assistant for one year and a research assistant for two years. Both of these positions gave me great teaching experience.

The first few minutes with any new student are critical. First, I work with them to understand where their comprehension currently is. Next, I work to discover how they learn best, so I can adapt my tutoring to be ideal for them. Some people like to see things visually, and others thrive with repetition. It is my job to adapt to each student's needs.



I have worked mostly with high school and college students, but I also enjoy helping middle school and elementary school students when there is an opportunity to do so.



A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If students come to their teachers with very specific problems, the lesson is much more effective. Asking questions like, "What exactly do I not understand?" or "Which concepts am I not able to teach to another person?" help pinpoint where lesson time should be spent so the student can improve as much as possible.

I generally charge $35 per hour, with a $20 minimum cost for a half-hour lesson. However, in unusual circumstances, I am happy to negotiate the price.
