  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in Chemistry was developed during my A level studies, thanks to my then Chemistry teacher. For me, he was an ideal teacher - deeply knowledgeable, but humble. Very patient and encouraging with all kinds of doubts, even silly ones. For him, no doubt is ever silly! He was my inspiration to become a teacher instead of becoming a techie although I am a qualified engineer. Private tutoring lets me use my knowledge and teaching skills to help students excel in Chemistry. I get immense pleasure from converting students to Chemistry lovers one after the other, time and again!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

Chemistry as a subject I feel is much underrated and not explored much, compared to other sciences. No wonder Chemistry is the least researched and is the most promising of STEM with future growth – both career wise and also scientific discovery. It is a subject that can be combined with physics, biology or computing in higher level for further discovery. Chemistry is a science that is used by everyone in real life, though known little even today. The importance of pharmacochemistry, biochemistry, drug discovery etc is very vivid in these strange times and is a good reminder on the need for Chemistry related studies.
Students get confused often about how to study Chemistry. Particularly Organic Chemistry is a nightmare for many as they fail to see the connection between reactions, rather they get puzzled with complicated structures. I love to help them to embrace the challenge and master it.
Inorganic Chemistry, mainly Metallurgy, students find most boring, though some teaching approaches make it interesting.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Chemistry teacher, Madam Curie and of course Jennifer Duodna (who discovered CRISPR gene editing, expedited vaccination)
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Good listening skill, ability to connect with students to understand where they stand in terms of strengths and weaknesses, structuring the pedagogy for the individual in a personalised manner, to align with such strengths and weaknesses at a topic level, is must in a good tutor.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my school day, I was not the best in every subject. On the contrary, I was one of the rebel kind 😊 but I was an intent listener when my favourite teacher (of course of favourite subject) was there. Also I was very keen in practical lab. So it is important to give yourself sometime to understand what you love to learn and then spend your energy to learn it the best.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Learning for yourself and teaching others with same passion are not the same. To be a good tutor, one needs to be her own teacher and learn a lot more. Initially My challenge was to gain students’ confidence that Chemistry is easy and fun and make them listen. Later on, it came to not only listen to me but to love the subject I am teaching. So I try to make the subject to something they find comfortable to deal with, make it understandable, relatable and loveable!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching Chemistry, anything to do with Chemistry! Period. When I teach I hardly remember time. Running and baking (little less now) are my other two favourite things to do anytime of the day.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I would say teaching students across continents for the last 20 years. I am glad that I could convert thousands of students into Chemistry lovers and many of them landed in an incredible list of universities, a few continuing Chemistry at PhD / research level – the latest being in ETH Switzerland; Uppsala Sweden etc. Many of my students are successful professionals at the highest level – Apple, Google etc. I have designed and delivered pedagogy for IIT JEE (Indian Institute of Technology), arguably one of the world’s toughest engineering entrance exam.
I am flattered and humbled that many of my students feel whatever they have learnt in Chemistry and being inspired to follow their dreams is because of me.
